Roundabouts

The state of Wisconsin is starting to build more roundabouts to eliviate four way stops and stop and go lights. Is your state using this type of traffic control? I was just curious if we were ahead of the times or way behind.

We have some here in SE Michigan.

I've never heard of them. :think: It would be nice if we did.

You and me both!! We're getting more of them around here. In fact, there's a really intricate series of them near this mall in my friend's town. We have affectionately entitled them: The Circles of Doom. We're just happy to get out of there alive!

They've been a part of our roads here in Britain for as long as I can remember and generally work well, providing drivers know how to take them properly!

Maureen, I think the first time I heard of roundabouts was in the Beatles' Penny Lane: "Behind the shelter in the middle of the roundabout, the pretty nurse is selling poppies from a tray..."

we have at least 6 of them on long island that i know of and there are some in new jersey...they are called traffic circles here

Me too, Savannah. They are more of an annoyance than anything.

I'm so glad to see that I'm not alone in my utter disdain for those things!

The first time I ever encountered one was when I was headed to a military base. It's a miracle I'm home YET. That circle was demonic. It wouldn't let ANYONE out!

here in Australia we have roundabouts everywhere,,,,they definately are better at keeping traffic flowing but takes a while for ppl to get use to not having to give way ....1st car on the roundabout has right of way here ....i find traffic lights now very annoying

I know of 2 around here. Ok, not really around here, just in the big city, when we go. We never go through them, we just see them from the main road.
When I was driving back from Maryland, me and my Granddad got turned around. I was going to go up the street and turn around, and next thing I know I'm in a traffic circle! It was my first one, and I wish it could have been my last one!! lol

Here is one during rush hour

Yeah, try navigating one of those--we call them rotaries not roundabouts in Mass--in a place like Cape Cod over a busy summer weekend. So, not fun. We have a few rotaries in towns close to us and they are a hot spot for numerous accidents every year.

We call 'em traffic circles down here in the South.

I hate them!!

They're supposed to smoothen out traffic flow, but I don't think they do a very good job!
