Woman Bitten by Bear at Wisconsin Zoo, Fingers Severed

MANITOWOC, Wis. — Police say a bear bit off a woman's fingers at a Wisconsin zoo after she ignored barriers and warning signs to try to feed the animal.

The Lincoln Park Zoo in Manitowoc closed after the incident Friday morning. Police say the 47-year-old woman lost a thumb and a forefinger, and two other fingers were partially severed.

The woman's boyfriend was bitten as he tried to pry the bear's mouth off her hand, but he didn't lose any fingers. Her 3-year-old granddaughter wasn't injured.

A mayor's office statement says alcohol played a factor.

I'm sorry, but.................that was her own fault. What an idiot! What did she think was going to happen as she stuck her hand over the barrier? Nice example to set for her granddaughter.

I guess rules don't apply to everyone. And Teresa, what you said is so true. Not only is she teaching the kid not to pay attention to warning signs, she obviously wasn't in any condition to have her granddaughter with her if she had enough alcohol in her system to try and hand feed a bear.

I'm sorry that happened to her (must have terrified her granddaughter!) but that just wasn't using any common sense to reach over the barrier. No

I believe you, Rob. . . . even though I keep telling you that your temper will be the death of you yet. batEyes

I agree with Teresa and Cheryl, too. And I hate to think of how scary that must have been for that poor little three-year-old to witness something as horrible as seeing her grandma being hurt by a wild animal..... It wasn't me... 279394 And it was completely avoidable.

That was definitely my first reaction too. I agree with everything you all have said...my heart goes out to the granddaughter. Like Cheryl said she was in no condition to have this child with her in the first place. This poor kid is probably going to need therapy because she witnessed her grandmother's fingers get bitten off! It wasn't me... 279394 Just ridiculous.
