Off to the Outer Banks

We're taking off tonight for our annual trip to the Outer Banks. I might check in once or twice, but other than that I won't be back until July 18th. Have a great Fourth of July everyone!

The Outer Banks is a 200-mile (320-km) long string of narrow barrier islands off the coast of North Carolina, beginning in the southeastern corner of Virginia Beach on the east coast of the United States. They cover approximately half the northern North Carolina coastline, separating the Currituck Sound, Albermarle Sound, and Pamlico Sound from the Atlantic Ocean.

The Outer Banks is a major tourist destination and is known for its temperate climate and wide expanse of open beachfront. The Cape Hatteras National Seashore has four campgrounds where visitors may camp.

The Wright Brothers' first flight in a powered, heavier-than-air vehicle took place on the Outer Banks on December 17, 1903, at Kill Devil Hills near the seafront town of Kitty Hawk.

Thanks for sharing that information, Rob. We're actually in Kill Devil Hills now. The house we stay at is about a mile from the Wright Brothers National Memorial. I've always thought it was interesting that Kitty Hawk gets all the fame for the Wright Brothers, but Kill Devil Hills is where the flight tests took place.

The drive was great until we got into NC. The problem is that there is one bridge going into the Outer Banks, so on weekends traffic backs up. The last 25 miles took us about 3 hours.

The weather has been great. It's actually a tiny bit cooler here right now than it is at our home in Massachusetts. The ocean is like bath water. We might get some scattered thunderstorms this weekend, but overall the weather here is expected to be good.

Well gee, sorry I missed this! I knew you'd been missing, but didn't realize where you'd gone! Oh, I have heard such amazing things about the Outer Banks! I'm sure it was just glorious there Cheryl! Welcome home!

No problem, Amy. I know you've been busy with other things. We had a great time. The vacation was too short, but at least we had one.

We're leaving tomorrow for our annual visit to the Outer Banks. I won't be working while on vacation this year, so that's a plus. Not sure if I'll have time to check in tomorrow before we leave, so I hope everyone has a nice 4th of July.

Hope the weather is great there, Cheryl, and more bearable than here! Last summer was when my son went to Kitty Hawk for the first time, and was evacuated due to the hurricane! Hopefully no hurricanes in sight this time around.
