G.I. Joe was introduced by Hasbro at the American International Toy Fair in New York, February 1964. G.I. Joe was "America's Movable Fighting Man." This was new territory in imaginative play for boys - G.I. Joe was not a "doll" he was an "action figure."
************ Who here owned a G.I. Joe action figure? I was a tomboy so I used to play with them lol I used to watch the cartoons on Saturday morning as well

I had one! A very cool doll action figure!
I also had Major Matt Mason, Mattel's man in space.

I had three brothers and no sisters - so even though I wasn't much of a tomboy, I still had G.I. Joe dolls action figures, and played with them.
It's funny, my nephew, Michael, saw a Joe that he really wanted at the store one time, and he asked my Mom about it. She said, "Your birthday is coming up soon - maybe you'll get that doll for your birthday!" He looked up and down the aisle in horror to see if anyone had heard what she said, and he quietly said to her, "Grandma.....It isn't a doll! It's an action figure!" We must make the all-important distinction there.
Rob, Major Matt was magnificent and marvelous! (I had to alliterate it. )

Whoever coined the term "action figure" is a hero to little boys everywhere.
The Joe I had as a kid was about the size of Barbie/Ken, was made of plastic, and had moveable joints. Didn't the later version shrink and turn to rubber?
Major Matt was always about 6" tall and made of rubber. Here he is with all of his accessories:
