| I couldn't believe we didn't have a review posted of this one yet. I watched this episode last night and picked up on something I don't think I ever thought of before.
Adam finally works up the courage to propose to Mary. They decide to hold their wedding in Winoka, so Charles and Caroline are forced to leave their younger children behind in WG and take the train out to Winoka for the ceremony. When Caroline talks about how Mary used to run off when she was little, Mary begins to worry that two blind people could never take care of a sighted child and calls off the wedding.
A dust storm blows up while everyone from the blind school is out on a picnic. Once back at the blind school they notice Susan Goodspeed is missing. Adam and Mary go out alone to search for her. When they find her, Mary has a change of heart about marrying Adam, and they hold the ceremony at the blind school as planned.

| This has to be one of my favorite Mary and Adam episodes. They seem so natural together, romantic even. | |

| This is off topic a little. I've noticed in That in this time period. Weddings are like plan & simple. Not to over the top. & people get married for the right reason. how it should be. Glad They got married. they look cuite together. “Tomorrow is a new day with no mistakes in it... Yet.” ― L.M. Montgomery, Anne of Green Gables | |

| Yes. I think she won an award for "Maywe make them proud?", and was well deserved, even if this episode makes me cringe every time I watch it. Melissa Sue Anderson did a grat job performing a broken mother who had lost her baby in a fire.
When he was watching this episode, Jack Lee Thompson realized he wanted to give Melissa Sue Anderson the capital character in "Happy Birthday to Me", with Glenn Ford, so she did a great work after all.

Vanesa. I remember watching Happy Birthday to me with my brother......I still cannot eat shish kabob off a skwere. (lol) The last scene was classic....all of her friends around the the birthday table!!! Gosh....she was good in that (awful) movie “I am beginning to learn that it is the sweet, simple things of life which are the real ones after all.” ― Laura Ingalls Wilder

I think some of Alberts best acting was in this movie......Mary's crying out for her baby after the fire was so sad as was Alice Garvy's death. I often wonder why she just didn't throw the baby into someones arms outside. I mean she was by a window????! “I am beginning to learn that it is the sweet, simple things of life which are the real ones after all.” ― Laura Ingalls Wilder

| I know it was scripted but why would Caroline and Charles talk about losing Mary and her running away, you would have to be pretty clueless not to know how that would make Mary feel. I would be petrified too! | |

| I don't blame Mary for being terrified at the idea of a blind couple raising a family. | |

Well, I think it speaks to how much they thought of Mary as being just as self-sufficient as their other children. Also, unless you've gone through something like that, how can you know how a person will react? Adam was very different in his approach. He was willing to deal with the situation when it came up. I don't think Charles and Caroline realized how their words would affect Mary at all. What I want to know is how Susan managed to get lost. Once she was separated, she could have cried out and no one would have had to have gone searching for her. But for some reason she wandered off and ended up under the loading dock. Also, since Adam had never met the Reverend Alden, when the preacher arrived and suddenly took over the ceremony, wouldn't he have been confused?

| That's true, re Reverend Alden, Charles didn't tell Mary just in case he couldn't make it. If she whispered "Rev Alden" he might of remembered her talking of him, but your right, he just smiled. (maybe Charles told hm at the meeting with the other reverend?)
I know blind parents have children, although back then, I can't imagine it happening. Not seeing your child run off to the creek, having spots of poison ivy, if they got dirty, looked pale, so many things. I would have been petrified. If Adam could see, not quite as much, but I thought Mary had real fears and finding a child that ran off and wanted to be found is different than one who didn't. That's why Jane's mother (in the show where the blind girl painted))who was going blind gave her up if I remember correctly although they never mentioned a father in that show. I thought it was odd she got lost also, it was dusty but blind children usually hold hands or stay close. Sometimes though, everyone running around, it gets confusing. I don't think 2 parents with eye sight that raised 4 children would be that insensitive to the trials Mary and Adam would face. I can't believe Caroline didn't think of all the things that Mary couldn't do that she did as a mother. Mary was bright and could do many things well, but her fears were real and I think glossed over. Even if she had a baby and it lived, they would be loving parents but have challenges others didn't. I just thought they should have brought some of them up.
Wasn't that place they found the girl Albert's old home?

| I thought Adam and Mary had a lot of chemistry but that the trials of being blind and parents was glossed over also. This article shows the challenges, as far as parks, they said to pick fenced in areas, etc. The prairie wasn't fenced! Getting places, teaching, small things like seeing stains (or not)What's doable now, I can't see people doing then, but maybe they did. http://www.nfb.org/Images/nfb/Publications/brochures/BlindParents/ParentingWithoutSight.html | |
