| Michael's appointment with the Neurologist was today. We had already resigned ourselves to the fact that they just weren't going to be able to find out what was causing the seizures. But, at Michael's appointment today, we learned that he has three different kinds of Epilepsy. (I didn't know a person could do that) And, from the EEG that they did to track his brain activity (they did it for 16 hours!) they are estimating that he was actually having around 80-100 seizures a day. :o SO.........he's still on the Keppra and Dilantin. We *were* hoping that he'd be able to go off the liquid, because it tastes so bad to him - but we had also prayed for God's will. And there is NO WAY we want to chance him starting the seizures again. The doctor said that if we want to chance it, we can let him do 10 minutes of computer a day, and see if it triggers the seizures again..............No thank you!! The last seizure he had was so severe that we almost lost him. We'll wait a while before we try to start him back to any computer work. Anyway, I thought I'd update you all. Thank you for your prayers, and private messages. It means a lot to me. | |

| I'm sorry to hear about this Savannah. I will be sure to add Michael to the prayer list at church again. BTW, I was reading one of my trade journals and it spoke of an organization which had dogs which were trained to sense an oncoming seizure and could help save lives. I believe all they ask for is a donation of any amount. I can dig the article out and get the name of the organization if you're interested.

| Well Savannah, you KNOW Michael has been in my prayers.....3 kinds......WOW! My oldest sister was epileptic and the doctor had my mom and dad count the number of seizures she had to determine the severity.....this was years ago before they had all the fancy equipment that can count them now.........Mom said when it got to over 200 in one day, she just couldn't count them anymore.........I pray that Michael will learn to live with what he has and that the doctors will be able to keep it in check......As far as the computer goes, is it the bright light of the monitor or is it the flickering lights of the games he plays? All monitors have some sort of control on it to dim the brightness of the screen. You might see if that helps him............... - bethandmanly wrote:

Cheryl I have heard of those dogs and they recently had a blurb in the news about a lady in our area whose dog knew when she was going to have a seizure (her ex husband beat her so bad one time, it left her having seizures)........The dog wasn't trained for it, he just was SO close to her, he knew when things weren't right. He even broke through a window one time to go get a neighbor when things went wrong.....There are also dogs trained to know when a diabetic is getting ready to have a drop in their sugar............aren't animals amazing?!?!?! :woohooo: CANCER FREE!!! I was watching a program on TV one time about this lady who had seizures and her dog saved her life because he knew when she was about to have one. Yes Rhonda, they're amazing!

| Thank you, all! And, animals really are amazing, aren't they? They give so much joy. I forgot to mention one interesting thing, too. The neurologist also told us that they've seen a sharp increase in pediatric epilepsy cases within the last year. (More so than usual) They're so swamped with new cases that many times, the patients aren't getting in to see the neurologist himself, but his assistant instead. Very odd. I wonder what's causing the increase? And, if it's nation-wide, or just within my region? . . . . Very puzzling. | |

| Hey Savannah,
I haven't forgotten about getting you that name. I am just flat out this week and I have to search a couple issues to find it. If not tonight, then by tomorrow some times.

Lorrie Thank you, Lorrie. I'm very sure that all of the prayers that have been said for Michael are the reason that the right medication combination was found so quickly. It's very unusual, from what I've been told. And we sure appreciate the prayers!!

| I cannot find that darn article anywhere. I know it is in one of my trade journals, but I haven't been able to locate the right one yet. I'm still looking. In the meantime, I did find a lot of sites that talk about Seizure Dogs. Maybe if you contact the Epilepsy Foundation they might now what organization I heard about. The important thing to remember is that this organization--I swear it has Canine in its title--gives these dogs to you and requests a small donation.
I promise I will keep looking for it. I must have put that trade journal aside when I saw it because I thought of Michael immediately, and that's probably why I haven't been able to locate the darn thing.

- Cheryl, could the link I posted be what you are talking about?
That is what I was talking about, but the article I read named a specific organization that trained these seizure dogs and only requested a small donation from the people who got them. These dogs are quite expensive from what I understand, so I thought I would pass along the informaton about this particular article that a freelancer wrote for a pet magazine like Dog Fancy . That actually might be an idea too--checking the archives of pet magazines.
