“THE WISDOM OF SOLOMON”


An 11-year-old black child named Solomon Henry feels oppressed by his heritage's lack of opportunity in life. He runs away from his mother and older brother to pursue his dream of attending school somewhere. He comes across Charles Ingalls in Mankato, secretly hitches a ride in the back of his wagon, and eventually becomes a guest in the Ingalls home. As he helps out around the farm and goes to school in Walnut Grove, Solomon's optimistic attitude is a true inspiration to the whole family, but he struggles to open up about his real life.
















Another outstanding episode from Season 3! Solomon was such a good kid and had a different view of the world. The kids at school sure realized how good they had it. I'm sure a lot of them took education for granted. I LOVED how Laura treated him and how she was just amazed by him. It looks like she even gets the chills when she hears Solomon recite a song that his people used to sing about being free.

There was a memorable scene between Solomon & Charles and also the scene in the school where Solomon said he didn't like being black. Anyway, it's getting late and that's all I have to say for now. But... a great episode it is!

This was a very good esp.I agree with what you said. Sometimes things like this make us see how lucky we are to have what we do.

This is one of my favorite episodes. In Season 3.

It's funny when Charles messes with Mrs. Oleson like that. Another time this happens is in "Be My Friend", when Mrs. Oleson asks Charles whose baby Laura brought into the store, and Charles tells her it's Laura's. Then Mrs. Oleson looks out the window and sees Willie and Laura with the baby and jumps to the wrong conclusion about who the baby's father might be. Willie was how old then, 10? I don't think it would have been biologically possible!

Oh yeah!

I thought I had already commented on this episode, but guess not. I think this is one of those that was a stepping stone to the goodness of what Little House represents. Todd Bridges couldn't have been over ten in this , and I think he did an excellant job.
When I was in the 4th grade I had a friend (Kim) that was black and she and I talked about this episode. She at the tender age of 10 said " I wish people could look into my eyes and see why they are shiny, but they can't because they only see that my checks are black first." Kim passed away that summer and I have always remembered this episode and her. She had alot of wisdom too.

On a lighter note, I loved Michael saying he was his son from a former marriage....made Harriett think a little.

It's kind of funny. The world has come an long why.Things are a little better.Still a little hate still

Todd Bridges was cute in this episode. I enjoyed it

I love how Charles messed with Mrs.Oleson telling Solomon was his "son".

I have used a quote from this show when people who think minorities get so much more than they do...they have all the breaks, etc. I say, would you like to live to be 100? Would be live to be 100 and be black or 50 and white?
They never answer.

This is possibly the most bittersweet episode in the whole series. A young boy, so full of hopes and dreams, then the reality of real life comes crashing down.
It's so relatable too. Just substitute being black in the 1800s with... being a hard worker but you can't get the job because of some excuse an employer wants to make up. I'm sure there are other examples of having hopes and dreams, then real life hits.

Todd Bridges was soooo cute in this episode. One of the best guest stars of the series.
