Question about a phrase Adam used Empty
PostSubject: Question about a phrase Adam used   Question about a phrase Adam used EmptyThu Apr 05, 2007 5:28 pm

In "I'll Be Waving As You Drive Away (Part 2)" Mary attents the school for blind.
I only know the dubbed german version of this episode and I was a little bit confused when in the scene where Adam is going to teach Mary how to eat correctly, he says something like: "Soup is ready" But there is no soup served in that scene.
Well, first I thought it was a blooper in the translation and they made "Suppe" (=soup) from the word "supper", what sounds very much alike in German. But another person, who owns the original DVDs, told me that Adam says "Soup's on" indeed.

I never heard this before and can't find this phrase in my dictionary. Is this a common phrase in the USA for "Dinner is ready" or is it a local idiom?

It would be nice if anybody could tell me something about that.

Yes, "Soup's on" is a common phrase for "dinner's ready" :)

My mom used to say it all the time...she'd yell out the back door "Soup's on!" and we'd be having Salisbury Steak lol

Yeah. I don't think it's a good way to announce the meal ... it can be deceiving when you're actually craving soup and get something else  lol

Hi. Wave

Although we've never used the phrase, I've heard it many times as it's very common in the US.

And yes, it can be confusing to some people, I guess, if they don't know what the phrase means.

BTW - I'm pretty sure you won't find it in a dictionary. If you search online for the phrase, you might come up with something. See what these people have to say -
