Yep, definitely like Toby. He's the scarecrow from the Wizard of Oz, just in case you didn't know.

Yes! And he moves exactly like the Scarecrow will do in the movie! Thumbsup I wish we could watch more of Toby in LHOTP...What a pity he was only in two episodes Blue

The scene in the loft when Laura blows her nose and tries to hand the hanky back to Albert is hilarious.

I think Toby noe is funny. I haven't seen Dance With me in a long time. I am going to be watching a LHOTP marathon. I will be watching my favorite episodes from each season and I added Dance With Me as one I will be watching.

When you watch it, pay particular attention to that loft scene. Its vintage Matt Labyorteaux.........

A couple things about this episode.

1) Ray Bolger was great.

2) When Laura is trying to make her crush jealous by paying attention to his best friend she brings him an extra peanut butter sandwich for lunch. It's doubtful that peanut butter would have been available in Minnesota circa 1880. The patent for the modern peanut butter production process wasn't issued until the mid-1880's and other production methods weren't developed until the 1890's. One of the few anachronisms I've found so far.

3) It's always a cute story line when dealing with childhood crushes. But in this case, Laura goes from having a crush on a tiny, spindly, 13 or 14-year boy in this episode to courting a 25-year-old man just 8 episodes later. Sort of a creepy thought.

Peanut butter and jelly is mentioned in another episode -- I think it's "Times of Change", the one where Mary goes to Chicago to visit John and he dumps her. On the train on the way back, Charles gives Marry a PB&J sandwich, if I remember it correctly.

There are other anachronisms -- the phonograph ("The Talking Machine"), which may have been invented but surely wouldn't have made its way to rural Minnesota; football ("The Winoka Warriors" and "Fight Team Fight"), which probably wasn't yet popular (or even heard of) in Minnesota and Dakota Territory; and basketball ("Dearest Albert, I'll Miss You"), which hadn't yet been invented.

Good ones. Basketball is a definite anachronism - not invented until the 1890's. As for football? Remote possibility but highly unlikely to be popular in MN in 1880. It was primarily an eastern game until Michigan established a collegiate program around the time the epis were suppose to have taken place.

No... not from Michigan.  I'm from NY... within a few hour drive of the Wilder homestead near Malone.   ww.almanzowilderfarm.com/visitus.htm (add the 3rd w to see the web site... I can't post links yet as new member)

Not everybody is from Michigan, Floyd! Wink

VERY cool that you live so close to the Wilder homestead, Dan! Have you ever been there? Farmer Boy is my favorite of the Little House books.

Edited to add: Another anachronism is the appendectomy that Doc Baker performed. The first successful appendectomy was performed in the U.S. in 1887.

I haven't been there. Will visit next time I'm up that way. Having not watched LHOTP in some 25 years I'm just getting back into doing some reading and research about it, and came across the Wilder Homestead info. Looking forward to going though.

Good call on the appendectomy!

This episode was amusing. Charles and Jonathan were so surprised to find Toby Noe, and he sure wreaked havoc once he arrive in Walnut Grove! The scene where he plays the organ in the church is the best part of the episode, I loved how everyone in the church got up to sing along with the music. I wish Toby Noe had been in more episodes after this one or at least one more, he sure was a funny addition

In typical Little House fashion, we never see Jason or his friend Ned again, not even in the schoolhouse scene in the very next episode.

Piece of trivia: the first song they play at the barn dance (where Toby looks emotionally detached) is "Sweet Betsy from Pike" which Rose Wilder Lane remembered from her childhood: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xBc-Tqn6zTA
