Multiple viewings!

Over the time of about a year I have seen this section of the bible 3 times. I haven't even been looking in the bible when I've seen it.

Mathew. Chapter 5, Verse 3-5

"Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are they who morn: for they shall be comforted.
Blessed are they the meek: for they shall inherit the earth."

1 of the times has been on this site. The other two I've noticed on different TV shows that deal with nothing about the catholic faith.
It seems important. Mainly because I've seen it so often on random occasions.
I've never understood those verses, and I think there might be more following.
Can somebody explain what they mean?

I've looked it up and the next sections are...

Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy
Blessed are the pure of heart: for they shall see god
Blessed are the peacekeepers: for they shall be called sona (what is sona?)

That should read "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called the children of God." One of the "hallmarks" of being a Christian should be trying to live peaceably with those around us, because that's what the Bible teaches.

Quote :

"Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

This is referring to people who have faith in Jesus, and have been through deeply trying times - and maybe their trials won't end here on earth...but they can still count themselves blessed, because they still have Heaven to look forward to.

Quote :

Blessed are they who mourn: for they shall be comforted.

It's kind of like looking for the good, even in a bad situation. Those who are mourning always have someone who will comfort them - if not a person in their lives, then God is willing to comfort them if they'll let Him.

Of course, these are just a few thoughts about those verses. . . There's so much more to them, and they can mean different things to different people, too. Here's the full text - Matthew 5:1-12

In the Catholic faith these are known as the Beatitudes (blessings). If only people would treat each other with such kindness this might be a better world than it currently is.

Thanks for the information. We scathed the beatitudes in PSR but I guess I forgot them.
