California Chrome sustains gash to foot at Belmont   

NEW YORK -- California Chrome sustained a bloody gash to his right front foot during the Belmont Stakes, an injury that may have hurt his chances in his failed bid to sweep the Triple Crown for the first time in 36 years.
Photos taken while the horse was walking back to the barn after his loss in the third leg of the Triple Crown on Saturday show the injured hoof.
It isn't clear when the injury happened, but the colt's camp says it's not serious. Chrome finished in a dead heat for fourth with Wicked Strong.
The horse was the overwhelming favorite in the Belmont and his supporters were hoping he would become the first Triple Crown champion since Affirmed in 1978.

So glad medicine has come a long ways from what it used to be....they can take care of things like this.....When I think of a horse being shot because of a broken leg and such, I think of Pa telling Laura to get to the house, and as she is running off, she stops short in her tracks when she hears Pa's gun shoot her beloved horse, Bunny.   

I saw a photo that was taken when Chrome was breaking out of the starting gate yesterday, that showed what looked to be the hoof of the colt next to him clipping the back of Chrome's hoof, which could have caused his injury. If that is what happened, he still ran a great race despite the injury. He was near the front of the pack the entire race.


I couldn't watch the interviews after the race with the people whose horse won. I don't think it's fair that horses are able to come into the Belmont after not running the Preakness, or not running the Derby and the Preakness. It was fifteen years before I was even born the last time there was a Triple Crown winner I wonder if we will ever have another one.

WOW!  Just heard that 8 out of 10 horses were 'fresh' as they had not run all three races (Kentucky Derby-5/7, Preakness-5/17 and Belmont-6/7).  That means California Chrome and Wicked Strong were the only ones who ran all three.....and those 2 tied for 4th place....interesting.....(another reporter said 3 out of 13 ran all 3 races)  

My opinion is that... you can't win the Stanley Cup or World Series by just showing up at the final game, you have to work hard throughout all of the playoffs. So horses shouldn't be able to just run in the Belmont, because when they they don't have to work as hard to get there as the horses who ran in all three triple crown races

It's Kentucky Derby day! The horses I'll be cheering for are Dortmund (who is the son of a former Kentucky Derby winner) and American Pharaoh.

It was a great race! Very close!

It's Preakness Stakes day! The Preakness Stakes is the second part of horse racing's Triple Crown. I will be watching the race today!

Belmont Stakes is tomorrow, for those interested, NBC 4:30 pm Eastern Time.
I think we are going to have a repeat of last year....a horse going for the Triple Crown, while racing against fresh horses....

I can't believe we FINALLY have a TRIPLE CROWN WINNER!!!!! I have wanted to see a horse win the crown for so long, and honestly I was starting to wonder if it would happen ever again because so many horses came so close to winning it but fell short in the Belmont. But American Pharoah proved that wrong!! I was so so so excited to see him win the race last weekend! It was an incredible race and he ran so well. And I can't imagine how his jockey must feel to be the first Triple Crown winning jockey since 1978!
