Should We Be Excited Or Scared About the Little House on the Prairie Movie?

Laura Ingalls Wilder's Little House memoirs, the story of her settler family's migration from Wisconsin to (eventually) the Great Plains, and the series of books that followed it are close to holy writ in the canon of women's literature. Told from Wilder's perspective, the books recount her adventures in the schoolroom and in sod houses, through the fever that steals her sister Mary's sight and her courtship with Almanzo Wilder, the homesteader who would become her husband. The series is a phenomenon so powerful that its inspired cookbooks and memoirs of the obsessed, like Wendy McClure's The Wilder Life. So the news that Sony Pictures is considering a feature-length adaptation of the first book is a cause for both excitement and anxiety.


Part of what makes the possibility of this particular Little House remake both tantalizing and unnerving is the people who are reported to be involved in it. Abi Morgan, who has signed on to write the movie, doesn’t exactly have a resume that suggest a prairie childhood: She wrote Shame, Steve McQueen's harrowing portrait of sex addiction, the Margaret Thatcher biopic The Iron Lady, and created and wrote The Hour, the BBC's excellent drama about the staff of a news magazine show in 1957. Morgan has a real talent for creating adults who work through sophisticated moral tangles, often of their own making, but I'm not sure how she'll tackle a child's perspective. And David Gordon Green, who is set to direct, may have made his name with the sensitive indie All The Real Girls, but recently he's spent time on slacker comedies like Pineapple Express, Your Highness, and The Sitter.


This isn't to say that Little House on the Prairie couldn't benefit from an adult sensibility. While the soapy memory of the television adaptation may obscure the reality of the books, part of the power of the original series is its clear-eyed observations of trying circumstances. Wilder may have been recounting childhood memories, but her experiences were hardly those of a sheltered innocent. Her family's journey was marked by dreadful fevers, culture clashes with the Native Americans settlers who were being displaced from their land, and blizzards that could strand a man, eating his children's Christmas candy to survive. Even when the family did settle into a house, they did so in a place touched by tornadoes that could break every bone in a boy's body, where the jobs available for young women took them far from their families and into homes dominated by domestic violence. The Little House books are powerful, and can be the first ones girls ever read that trusts them to reckon with grown-up fears and consequences.


A movie that honors that tension would be a real event, both for those of us who grew up with the Little House books, the adults who introduced them to us, and all the little girls in our lives we hope will come to love Laura Ingalls Wilder as much as we do. But for that to happen, Morgan and Green will have to approach the material as a new frontier to discover, as it's been for generations of readers before them.

Oh, and GH's Haley Pullos as Laura! I think she'd be perfect! (For those who don't know, she plays Molly Lansing on GH).

Kevin Costner is a great choice! And I like Diane Lane, too. Still remember her in Lonesome Dove.

If they would find actors that are closer to the real Ingalls' than finding pretty Hollywood actors, it would be more realistic....but not sure how many people would go see it.....that is, if they are planning on doing a "REAL" story on Little House....

I am just going to say it. What difference does it make what kind of films a person has been involved with before? Just because the other films were "heavier", I don't see how they can't make a movie that is lighter. I think, though, that as much as this should follow the books, I think they should add a bit more realistic drama to the films. I really do. Yes, we know what they went through in the books, but I don't think they should sugarcoat it at all. I was thinking about this the other day. While I understand wanting to maybe keep it "simple" for kids to see, I think the film should have a little more substance for the adults. I don't really know if what I am writing is making sense. I know what I am thinking in my mind. I just don't know if it is coming out to the rest of the world in a sensible way.

I know LH is a "family" show, and I watched it since I was little, but as an adult, that show seems like such an adult show. Yes, kids are on there, and a good amount of episodes are about the kids, but they were done in such a way that it still came across to me as an adult show. If I am not making sense again, well, just know that I am making sense to me!

By the way, the article mentioned "Pineapple Express". Yes, I DID see that movie. In the theater, in fact. Actually, I forced my mother to go with me. Well, I guess "forced" isn't the word as all I had to do was say "Do you want to go see 'Pineapple Express' with me?" and she said "OK". I was trying to earn free movie tickets that year and I had to see 8 movies to do so. I chose to go see that one. And you know what? I loved it. My mother did, too. We were sitting in that theater laughing so at it. It is basically 1 hour and 45 minutes or so of absolute absurdity. And it was funny! NOT a movie that I recommend to everyone, but it was funny. Having said that, I will now say this. I HIGHLY doubt that man will turn "Little House On the Prairie" into another "Pineapple Express". I am thinking that if this guy decided to take this film on, he wanted to. And if he wanted to, he has an idea of how he is going to do it. The more I think about it, the less afraid I am about HOW it will be filmed, but more afraid, rather, of the casting. But then again, that is always my fear with every movie.

Yes! I love him. I have all these years. I have been loving him while everyone thought it was hip to hate him. I would definitely choose him. Plus, the man can rough up his looks pretty well. We mustn't forget that Charles Ingalls DOES have a beard. And you need an actor who can be believable out on the frontier. He can do both and be believable (some people look stupid in beards ).

Also, and I am a firm believer of this, they need at least ONE name actor. Kevin Costner would be a good choice.

They are going to be in the Superman movie "Man of Steel" next year as Clark Kent's parents. Just some useless information I thought I would mention.

This is why I think Kevin Costner is a good choice. He is a good-looking guy, but he doesn't have that generic look (the what I consider not-too-attractive attractive look). And he can pull of that ordinary man look pretty well no matter what he is in (just look at him in "Dances With Wolves" and then look at him in "The Untouchables"). Also, I always thought the real Caroline was attractive. They could find someone OK to play her. I am more terrified of the kids that will be chosen. There are a lot of kid actors that I don't like out there. I just find them obnoxious. These characters could be played by unknowns, I think.


Having rambled on like this, I have a question. I don't know if it was in that article that I just quoted, but I thought I read on here that they were going to film the series of books. Or they said something about this being the first movie. Or did I misread that? Honestly, I think I would like them to do that. I would like to see Laura's time in Wisconsin to get some attention for a change.

Costner is a good choice but depends on the time frame of the movie. He's knocking on sixty years old, but that guy can act!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How about Robert Duvall as Mr. Edwards? He was unforgettable as Gus MCrae in Lonesome Dove.

I think that Alex made the best of all the choices. I like all the actors he picked for "our movie"...
