Celebrated actress Dame Maggie Smith has passed away at age 89.
Smith was born in 1934 in England. She gained many film and television credits throughout her decades-long career, perhaps with her best-known roles being the sharp-tongued Dowager Countess on Downton Abbey and the indomitable Professor McGonagall in Harry Potter.
Smith was a two-time Oscar winner, in 1970 for Best Actress in a Leading Role for The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie and in 1979 for Best Supporting Actress for California Suite.
Smith's other roles included Gosford Park, Othello, Sister Act, and The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel.
