Subject: Maybe we're not who we think we are... Thu Aug 16, 2007 8:21 pm
Did anyone watch Keith Olbermann's show on MSNBC on Wednesday night? It was really interesting. They were talking about what computers might be like in the future, and they said that future programmers will probably be able to create virtual worlds - kind of like the Sims stuff out there now - but populated with billions of virtual "people" who are conscious and able to think and experience emotion. Maybe these virtual worlds will be used to predict social or evolutionary trends, or maybe they'll just be created for fun.
They had a professor of philosophy who took it a step further. What if someone has already created a virtual world? And what if we're it?
He said he thinks there's a 20% chance that the universe as we know it is merely a virtual program on the hard drive of a computer being operated by someone in a technically advanced civilization. Who knows, maybe the last million years of Earth's history is nothing but some sixth grader's science project.
Neat concept! Here's a link to the video from Keith Olbermann's show:

That concept - or, a similar one, anyway, was introduced in my brother's class when he was in fifth grade. Not that we were possibly a virtual world, because "virtual world" wasn't even around back then - but that we could be a race of robots, and not be aware of the fact. Or that some of our loved ones were actually robots, rather than humans. It completely freaked my brother. He was so worried that he was a robot! Poor kid!
But if I were only a part of some world that some advanced programmer created, and my life was just a part of his/her "game" to play. . . . after everything that has happened this year *alone* . . . . I'd want to do some serious harm to that programmer right about now.

It's possible. I was watching this other show called 'Gamer world' or something like that. Well they were talking about this game that people play, that is like the Sims and people play and advance in levels... meaning accumulate things like you would do in real life.
This guy was saying how he has to play the game for a certain number of hours every day because he can't just let days pass and he would still be just a a guy w/ no job or a place to live (this is all in a virtual world).
This other man who also plays 'the game' started playing the game w/ his wife. He and his wife were characters on the game. His calls himseld 'Neverdie' and I found a pic of him.
Anyway, he and his wife were becoming well known in the virtual world. Then his wife passed away in real life... so he had to tell the people in the virtual world about her and they would feel very sorry for the loss... probably hold certain things in her honor, like maybe attending a ceremony, they all do this in the computer. The guy also made some money in that life as he would create clothes for other characters who "went to his shop" and liked to dress their characters in those clothes so they would send the money to 'Neverdie' and he would give them a code or something so their characters would wear the clothes they bought.
It's crazy how that type of world exists and how so many people take it so serioius.
Anyway, the guy is now rich w/ all he has made and the clubs he owns in this world. Check out this video where you see the real him and they talk about his club. It's insane! lol
And here is a day at Club Neverdie

Ok- when I read that line above, my first reaction was that if that was so then this is some kind of sick joke. Too bad we wouldn't have any input on the "real" person who would be in charge of our virtual destinies right now.

Exactly!! Lol. Maybe Rob is the one that is running this virtual world, lol.
That is strange to think about though. I also heard that in the future the government is going to put chips in everyone to monitor them. If that happens I hope I am gone by then.

A useless piece of trivia:
Did you know that Frank L. Baum got the inspiration for his Yellow Brick Road from the brick roads that he saw while staying in his summer cottage in Macatawa in Michigan? And, interestingly, the library loan system's code letters for that region are "OZ". (Though it's for reasons other than his books)

One thing I never understood. Obviously the Wizard had everything he needed to grant the wishes of Dorothy, the Scarecrow, and the others. So why did he make them "earn" these gifts by sending them off to steal the Wicked Witch's broom, which very nearly got them all killed?
