So I was watching this video on MTV the other day. It was a hip hop video and the song was called 'Crank Dat' by this young rapper named Soulja Boy.
I liked the dance they were doing and a couple of times I played the song in my car as I drove hom from work.

Well... the last time I did that, I actually not only listened but also paid attention to the lyrics of the song. Some I didn't understand because he uses a lot of urban slang. So I got online to see if I could find out what it meant and boy was I surprised! OhMy

It is a song that is demeaning to women and yet you have little girls as young as 7 years old dancing this song and their parents filming them and posting the videos on youTube. At school dances, the song is also played and even some teachers have been seen going crazy and dancing to this song. mad

I told several of my friends who used to like this song and they were also surprised to find out what they were shaking their butts to or dancing to or cranking up the volume to...

So even though the beat is neat and even though the dance choreography is cool.... I'll try to pay more attention to the lyrics of the song as well... because if I'm bopping my head to it, it's like if I'm supporting what this guy is saying.

I know this happens a lot.... how many of you loved a song because of it's beat but then found out the the meaning of the song was not what you expected? lol Raise your hand grinsmiley

*Raises hand*
But i'm trying to be more careful of that now

Wow Carol, I just look at the lyrics for that song and...wow! We listen to this song at school and even dance to it in PE. I can't believe we all like that song. I never really paid that much attention to the words, just the beat of it. Though I mostly listen to country, that was one song I listened to! I'm gonna be sure to tell my friends too and be more careful to listen to the lyrics too.

It's also interesting how different versions of songs can change their meaning by tweaking the lyrics even the slightest bit. Take "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun," for instance. When Robert Hazard wrote it... well, let's just say it was a long shot to guess it would one day become a feminist classic via Cyndi Lauper's revised wordings.

But yeah, sometimes the lyrics of a song can destroy an otherwise great sounding beat.

Well, the song "Angel" that Sarah McLachlan sings, especially sung with Josh Groban, has got to be the most beautiful song out there, but did you know she wrote the song about a drug addicts struggles in the world.....I know after 9-11, the song was put to video with pictures of the twin towers and gained a lot of popularity, but to know it was written about a drug addict, kind of takes away from the beautiful song that it is, but I still love it.... batEyes

McLachlan wrote this about a drug-addict's struggles with the world. The "angel" symbolizes the drugs the addict gives in to repeatedly.
As McLachlan explained on VH1 Storytellers, this song is about the Smashing Pumpkins touring keyboard player Jonathan Melvoin, who overdosed on heroin and died in 1996. McLachlan explained that there's nothing constant when you are on the road; everything becomes the same

Angel

Spend all your time waiting
for that second chance
for a break that would make it okay
there's always some reason
to feel not good enough
and it's hard at the end of the day
I need some distraction
oh beautiful release
memory seeps from my veins
let me be empty
and weightless and maybe
I'll find some peace tonight

in the arms of the angel
fly away from here
from this dark cold hotel room
and the endlessness that you fear
you are pulled from the wreckage
of your silent reverie
you're in the arms of the angel
may you find some comfort here

so tired of the straight line
and everywhere you turn
there's vultures and thieves at your back
and the storm keeps on twisting
you keep on building the lie
that you make up for all that you lack
it don't make no difference
escaping one last time
it's easier to believe in this sweet madness oh
this glorious sadness that brings me to my knees

in the arms of the angel
fly away from here
from this dark cold hotel room
and the endlessness that you fear
you are pulled from the wreckage
of your silent reverie
you're in the arms of the angel
may you find some comfort there
you're in the arms of the angel
may you find some comfort here
