Macclesfield parents have been charged with first-degree murder and felony child abuse after their 13-year-old died while being tied to a tree.
The Edgecombe County Sheriff's Office responded to the home of Brice and Sandra McMillan at 4:39 p.m. Thursday after being asked to assist first responders. Upon arrival at the residence at 1110 Felton Farm Road, deputies found the teen unresponsive in the ambulance, according to a statement by Sheriff James Knight.
While at the scene, Brice McMillan told deputies that his child had been disobedient on Tuesday. As punishment they made the child sleep outside while tied to a tree, Knight said.
On Wednesday morning, the child was released from the tree, but was tied back up that night. The juvenile remained tied to the tree until his step-mother, Sandra McMillan, found him unresponsive at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.
The teen was taken to Heritage Hospital and pronounced dead, authorities said.
Two other children, ages 7 and 9, lived in the McMillan residence were placed in the custody of the Department of Social Services.
The investigation is ongoing. Check tomorrow's Telegram for more on this story.
