| What is Your First Language? ... and do you have a story to share that relates to language use, etc? :shifty: *My first language is Spanish. I had to repeat 2nd grade when I came to the States because of the language and glad I did. About 6 months after being here.. I remember my dad had this sun shade with the small words "Dodgers" and in big blue letters, "I'm a Fan". Well... at that time... the world only had one meaning to me and I told my dad it was weird that he had the sign that said he was a Fan. LOL Well, I later learned the 2nd meaning of it... | |

| We've always spoken English in our home, but my parents and grandparents also spoke French. I took eight years of French in grammar school and four years of Spanish in high school. Unfortunately, I can't speak either now. | |

English is my first language. I also know Latin, French, and ASL but am not fluent in any of the three. Do you speak Latin? That's GREAT! LOts of old books were written in Latin and some scientific words comes from Latin, so knowing this language you are able to know what the words mean without going to dictionnary. Vanesa.

| Yes, knowing Latin does really help in figuring out what words mean. It also helped when I learned French.
My mother really wanted my brothers and I to learn Latin as she felt it would help our English as well as help make it easier to learn different languages. I can't say that I appreciated too much then, but now I'm glad that I had four years of it. I don't remember a whole lot anymore, but if someone says a Latin phrase in a movie I can generally figure out what they said- which shocks me!

And it's also true that when you already knows a foreign language or two, later, it's easier to add more. Some languages had connection between them. Which is somewhat difficult is not to mix languages when you knows two or three too much similar between them! What a good think to know what people is saying in a movie when they quotes a phrase in Latin! Vanesa.
