Natural Disasters.... Hurricanes, Floods, Earthquakes, etc.... they strike when you least expect and cause a lot of damage and fear.
*What natural disaster have you experienced? Tells us your story here.
===================
In 1987 I experienced the Whittier Narrows earthquake. It had a magnitude of 5.9. It struck at 7:42 AM while I was getting ready for school. After it was over, a lot of people ran outside to check with neighbors and friends. After about an hour, we still had to go to school. While at school around 10AM we got another aftershock and everyone got under the desks. We were getting several so the principal canceled school and by 12PM the school was empty.
We were getting so many aftershocks that everyone started panicking and I remember going to the store to buy food, water and emergency stuff and boy was it crowded! Kind of like Black Friday
We bought a lot of water bottles, bread, canned food and 2 first aid kits. It was a scary time because of the aftershocks... you just never knew which aftershock would trigger a big earthquake. Those were the days I took the fastest showers possible LOL We also all slept in sleeping bags in the living room and it was very scary listening to the earth rumble in the middle of the night. In total, there were about 500 aftershocks! The biggest aftershock occurred 4 days later, sure was a scary time.
Here is a video I found on youtube that talked about it:

I totally remember hearing about that Carol! I was a junior in high school at the time. I'm glad you were ok! OMG, that first newsguy sure did look like he wanted to move! And did you catch the name of the other newscaster who hid under the desk, LOL? "Kent 'Shock'neck"! Just thought that was kinda cute, since he was discussing 'aftershocks!' Makes me sad to think of the college student who died from the collapse of a falling wall. So tragic.
I personally haven't experienced any natural disasters. I know there have been tornado touchdowns in other areas surrounding me, but not mine. Just a couple counties away from me a few years back, there was golfball and baseball sized hail that did severe damage. Michigan is fairly 'safe', for now anyway. I have my concerns for flooding from the Great Lakes in the future though.

I was born and raised in California and went through many earthquakes, fires and floods......We lived at the foot of the mountains, so we learned to watch for the fires and floods....
I recall one flood we had when mom came to pick us kids up from school (we usually walked home), and the waters were roaring up and over the curb and sidewalks....She couldn't park close enough to the curb because of the raging waters and we had to JUMP into the van. The waters were raging under us as we leaped through the air into the van, while mom had her hand outstretched to grab us if we fell......Pretty scary......
I also remember being in school and going through all the earthquake drills and all.....Kids these days go through fire drills.....we did that as well, but we actually had a different bell ring for the earthquake drill and we had to roll up into a ball under our desks.......and let me tell you, those desks were small and low.....lol :haha:
With the fires, we would have ashes floating around in the air and landing all over the place.....like snowfall, but gray and black flakes.......Air was so thick and heavy, it was hard to breathe......I remember going to bed one night after watching the news about a nasty fire in our area and waking up the next morning with it crawling over the crest of the mountain......I ran down the hallway screaming, "IT'S HERE! IT'S HERE!" My folks knew how worried all of us kids were about the fire the night before and they were pretty much ready to evacuate our house about the time the firefighters got it under control.....that was one nice thing about having a forestry firestation up the road from us......
Then....I moved to Oklahoma for a year and was picking my husband up from work. His office was across the street from the police station.....where the tornado sirens were..........As I stepped out of the car......those sirens began to BLARE!!!! I ran into his office, with my heart pounding in my throat......and said, "THAT IS JUST TOO CLOSE!" That was my FIRST experience with tornado weather......Since living in Arkansas now for over 19 years, tornadoes happen all the time, all around me.......They are fascinating, but, I'm not too anxious to run out and watch.......
Here in Arkansas, we deal with all kinds of weather related happenings. Last April, we had a hail storm that was SO bad, all the city offices in Fort Smith had holes in the siding and windows on the west side of the buildings!!! It looked like someone had blasted the town with gun fire......Cars were ruined, car dealerships looked like a war zone.....it was AWFUL!!!

I have never been in a natural disaster but there was a tornado that hit just up the highway and farther north of my house when I was in high school. It was a freightning event for everyone. Natural disasters just don't happen up here and for that I am very grateful.

I've been in a tornado - while I was out camping. (And yet, I still enjoy camping.) Then, we've had several that have visibly gone overhead, or near enough where we could see them. But, thank the Lord, it wasn't anything devastating. And, a couple of years ago, we actually had a 5.2 earthquake here. It's extremely rare around this area. It was kind of funny....I thought my dog was shaking my bed - that she was scratching her ears or something. (It was the middle of the night.) It never occurred to me that it could be an earthquake.
Does a 20 pound cat leaping on your head in the middle of the night count as a natural disaster??

I would be afraid to step inside your house, Savannah. :sad5: There are countless natural disasters right in your house...start with that 20-pound cat of yours!

Very true lol I remember we then had to act out different scenarios where people got hurt. One time I had to pretend I had broken a leg

Oh yeah, I forgot about that. I think that was only like a year ago actually! I remember my friend felt it while she was lying in bed and I only live about 45 minutes from her and we didn't feel anything. We talked to other people in our area who said they did though. Guess we're just not terribly observant. Either that or we were in a dead sleep!

Lily, if you want to stop over some time, I promise to keep all of the natural disasters at bay. I'll lock 'em all in the hall closet. And, I'll talk nice and loud so you can hear me from in there.

Well, my town had a flood a couple of years ago, and we always have tornado's around in the spring, but nothing has even happened to me or my family, thankfully.

Well way down here in Texas we have to watch the gulf during the months of June---November. Hurricanes are our biggest concern. After Ike last year I have a feeling I will be stocking up on supplies early. I lived in Arkansas until 10 yrs ago and tornados were always sneaking up on us. My grandma was so scared of lightening that she had lightening rods installed on top of the house. I remember asking her if I could go outside during a storm to see if they got struck. She stooped over and said " You need a spanking." and walked off. I couldn't figure out why..

In 1993 we had a blizzard here. The snow was up to my knees. Also when I was in about the 8th grade, I was in a tornado with my sister and her husband in their little pop-up trailer. We are lucky to be alive!

I thought it was the dog too when I felt an earthquake as a kid. I was practicing the piano, and I felt the bench shaking. I thought the dog was leaning against it and scratching. I looked down and didn't see him anywhere. We later found out it was an earthquake that originated in Kentucky, but we could feel it in central Ohio.

Really!?! There was a blizzard where I live, in 1993. I was to little to remember it, but we lived with my Grandparents at the time, and my mom was stuck in town, and I was stuck on the mountain. I guess I could have put that in my first post, but since I couldn't remember it.......

I remember the blizzard of 1993. A day after it hit I went into labor with my youngest. The main road to the hospital, 15 miles away, had not even been plowed.
We had a tornado that hit about 2 miles from where I lived (I was hiding at my friends house next door playing hooky from school, all by my stupid self). It got really dark and windy and I stood at the big picture window upstairs thinking "Wow, this is so cool", not knowing what was happening 2 miles away.
We also got the remnants of Hurricane Isabel. Our neighborhood lost lots of really big trees that took power lines with them. Lots of roads were blocked. We were so happy to see help arrive from as far away as Georgia.
Spring is finally here, the lovely pink blooms on the "spray" tree outside my window are gone leaving a beautiful willow.

Gin, you were one of those 'full of it' kids, weren't you? :haha:
Whoa Beckie, being in a pop-up duing a tornado would be SCARY!! You may as well not be in anything, LOL! Two years ago we camped right on a lake, in our trailer that is a hard side but has 'pop-out ends', and there was a severe thunderstorm that came across the lake. That was pretty scary--it happened very quickly and the wind was crazy---we thought our trailer was going to blow over! I still love camping on the water though---that incident hasn't detered me yet!
Alice, I'm assuming you got to the hospital ok? LOL! Sounds like that would be pretty terrifying---I almost ended up delivering my son in the car...he was born only 25 minutes after we arrived at the hospital. But that wasn't due to a natural disaster---just my natural stupidity for waiting so long to leave!

Back in about 2002 we had several things called micro bursts go through out city. On one end of my neighborhood several trees were uprooted and some roofs collapsed. During that same day there was a micro burst out near our local amusement park. There was a woman standing under the roof of a ride reading a book and the roof fell down and killed her. Luckily it was all around us and not near us. Also back in the late 90's we had tornadoes all around us and we never get them here. One happened on top of a mountain neighborhood! Luckily I was at piano lessons and didn't know about it till after. It was terrifying. We still had warnings so I was crying and extremely freaked and scared.
