| That last I heard, we have 1 confirmed case here in Michigan, with 48 possible cases.
I appreciate the media in regards to alerting people that it is out there, and what type of precautions to take, and symptoms to look out for. But, it seems like this is another case where the media is putting fear into people where it doesn't need to be. It's been the top news story on every news show and I'm afraid it's going to get to where people are afraid to leave their homes. Already, one entire school district is closed in Michigan because of a suspected case of a student at a high school. I appreciate the fact that this is something we should be concerened about and aware of, but sometimes I just feel the media goes a little too far.

| That is so true Pam...as someone mentioned on the 'Today Show' today, we are all watching this virus spread in 'real time', as opposed to what we would have 'witnessed' 20 years ago, when the media wasn't so 'in your face' about everything.
I'm amazed that the woman in Michigan's family wasn't affected. She has a child...it just seems odd that if this is that communicable, that the child didn't get it!
A doctor on the Today Show said that those face masks don't even filter out this virus, so I guess they're pretty pointless. “Not all of us can do great things. But we can do small things with great love.”

| I'm hearing rumors that TX might close schools for a week. Stay tuned. It is the lack of Christianity that has brought us where we are. Not a lack of churches or religious forms but of the real thing in our hearts. LIW.....Words From a Fearless Heart | |

| Yes, Texas is closing schools till May 11. I belong to another site and there is a teacher from there and she said schools would be closing. Here is what she had to say.... I am a teacher in the Lewisville school district, a suburb of Dallas. We are a very large school district. We have 40 elementary schools, as well as several high schools and middle schools. (Our district is spread out of over portions of several counties). At 2:30 this afternoon, they announced that they were shutting down our entire district until May 11th! We have had confirmed swine flu cases on the rise, and it was suggested by the state Health Dept. that we close. I am glad that they are erring on the side of precaution. But, honestly, I think many of the kids will still hang out together at the malls, at the movies, at play dates, etc. The parents are really mad because they have to work and don't know what to do with their kids next week. The nice thing is I have a week's vacation, and we don't have to make up the lost days! Too bad I have nowhere to go! CANCER FREE!!! April 9, 1998-April 9, 2025-I AM A SURVIVOR!!! | |

| Nick's old elementary school closed to sanitize everything today....a first grader was taken to the hospital for suspected swine flu, so they went into 'precaution mode'. They'll be re-opened on Monday, since the child tested negative. But geesh, what are schools supposed to do?! Go into panic mode every time a kid goes into the hospital just to be 'checked'? More often than not it'll probably just be the 'normal' flu! “Not all of us can do great things. But we can do small things with great love.”

That teacher has an excellent point; there is no guarantee that kids won't hang out together outside of school. This is getting ridiculous.

| They have brought cleaning crews in overnight to clean our HS. So far nothing more heard that we will close. I personally told my boys that IF school closes we will be doing spring cleaning at our house. (They groaned like Lurch on the Addams Family!) So now they are really wanting to go to school. We missed 9 days back in September due to Ike. We didn't have to make those days up, but I have a feeling we will if we miss more this year. I just want the year to be OVER!!!! | They have a really tough call to make, though. If they didn't close the schools down, and the swine flu swept through, and dozens of students ended up hospitalized....everyone would be saying "WHY didn't they close the schools when the first student started showing signs??". Even though it can be annoying and inconvenient, I'd much rather that they err on the side of caution when children are involved. - Gin wrote:

I just want the year to be OVER!!!! {{{Gin}}} I bet you do! I have a friend who works with the Texas Education Agency, and she said that as of right now those in charge are saying that any days missed due to swine flu are going to be excused days, so they won't have to be made up.

My mom and I were just saying exactly the same thing the other day, Savannah. I think the schools are sort of between a rock and a hard place at this point. “Not all of us can do great things. But we can do small things with great love.”

| My friend just sent this article to me on the Swine Flu....everyone should read it and be aware. Schools especially need to read this. You do NOT have to have a fever for it to be considered 'the flu', as most doctors presume. It is VERY hard to diagnose this now, and most doctors aren't even testing people for H1N1 when they come into the office. Scary indeed: http://news.yahoo.com/s/usnews/20090921/ts_usnews/seasonalcoldorswineflumomsfacetoughcalls“Not all of us can do great things. But we can do small things with great love.”
