The shows they are replacing them with don't seem like that much of an improvement.

Wow...its seems odd that they are taking almost all soaps off the air now. I was a ATWT watcher for YEARS, but stopped a couple of years before it ended. I'm not much of a daytime tv person anymore so I don't know what is on.

I hope that "The Young and the Restless" still has a few more years. I've been watching it for 15 years.

Well, Y&R renewed for 3 years at the end of 2010, so hopefully they keep going. I stopped watching soaps because as a writer, I got so sick and tired of the implausible storylines: dead people suddenly alive, everyone having access to hospital records, a person being in the right place to overhear a private conversation, and the way they would switch actors to age the children so it would fit in with the stories they wanted to tell.
I couldn't get away with any of that in a book, so why does daytime TV?

I can see it now....In the middle of a chapter, you decide that another character would be better suited for this storyline. "Why do a total rewrite??" Cheryl thinks to herself, "I have the perfect solution!" Cheryl quickly types the following into her manuscript: *Note to readers: The character of Marcus has now been replaced with William*

How about, "Note to readers: Yes, Jack was 10 in the last chapter, but now he needs to be 15 so the new storyline will work."

Perfect! That actually might make a very fun, spoofy kind of story to write.

People... that's why Spanish soaps are bettah! We get exposed to different story lines from all over Latin America. We get to see stories from Mexico, Venezuela, Columbia, Brazil, etc lol Stories are set in different time periods as well. We have some geared for kids, teens and entire families. Some actors may be the villan in one soap and then be the good person in the next or a crazy person... it's neat to see their acting range playing these different characters lol
Here are a couple of the intros to some of my favorites
My very FIRST soap opera to see... "Chispita" starring Mexican actress/singer Lucero. She was 13 years old.
Last year I finished watching another soap with Lucero (She's now 40 years old) called "Soy Tu Dueña"

"Soaps" in some countries, like the Middle East, seem to be more like a series...with maybe only 100 days or something and a definite plan to come to an end. That probably keeps them fresher. My mom is a big DAYS OF OUR LIVES fan, and it sometimes makes me laugh to find out the storylines now because they seem to be the same as from 25 years ago, just sometimes that the characters are different....and sometimes the characters are still the same!

If The Young and the Restless ends my Mom might just check out too. He has been watching for way too long. My aunt even had the theme song as her wedding song as she came down the aisle.

I actually followed it for a few years in the '80s... back when they were trying to pass Danny Romalotti off as a rock star.

I used to love ANOTHER WORLD. Especially Jake McKinnon (a character on there played by an actor named Tom Eplin).
Also, there was a short-lived "Christian" soap opera called ANOTHER LIFE that I really, really loved. It was only on about three years from around 1982 to 1985 I think. It was 1/2 hour and was on around 10 or 10:30 at night. (I think the time changed somewhere in its run). It was on the old CBN (Christian Broadcasting Network). I really enjoyed it. It was on Monday through Friday. Maybe it was also on earlier in the day, but I was in high school, so I watched it at night. And I think the 1/2 hour format is good because they don't just have to fill so much space with meaningless flashback scenes and pointless dialog. Plus there of course were not any "racy" bed scenes.
