Fast & Furious' star dies in car crash Nov. 30, 2013, 10:23 PM EST LOS ANGELES (AP) — Paul Walker, the star of the "Fast and Furious" movie series, died Saturday in a car crash that killed one other person north of Los Angeles, his publicist said. He was 40. Walker died Saturday afternoon, Ame Van Iden told The Associated Press. A statement on the actor's Facebook page said he was a passenger in a friend's car, and that Walker was in the area to attend a charity event for his organization Reach Out Worldwide. "We ... are stunned and saddened beyond belief by this news," the statement said. The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said that deputies found a car engulfed in flames when they responded to a report of a collision in the community of Valencia. Two people who were found in the car were pronounced dead at the scene. The Santa Clarita Signal reports a red Porsche crashed into a light pole and tree and burst into flames. Walker was working on "Fast & Furious 7" at the time of his death. He also starred in the suspense drama, "Hours," which is set for release this month. Walker rode the "Fast & Furious" franchise to stardom, starring in all but one of the six action blockbusters, beginning with the first film in 2001. The blond-haired, blue-eyed Los Angeles-native brought California surfer good-looks and an easy, warm charm to the popular street-racing series. "All of us at Universal are heartbroken," Universal Pictures said in a statement. "Paul was truly one of the most beloved and respected members of our studio family for 14 years, and this loss is devastating to us, to everyone involved with the 'Fast and Furious' films, and to countless fans." The son of a fashion model and a sewer contractor, Walker grew up in a working class, Mormon Los Angeles household. The oldest of five siblings, Walker's mother began taking him to auditions as a toddler. He was a child model beginning at the age of 2. Walker has said the early induction to show business wasn't to start him on a career path, but as a way to help provide for the family. After a string of TV roles as a child in the '80s, Walker made his feature film debut in the 1998 comedy "Meet the Deedles." Supporting roles in the films "Pleasantville," ''Varsity Blues" and "She's All That" followed. His performance in the 2000 thriller "The Skulls" caught the eye of producer Neal H. Moritz, who cast him in "The Fast and the Furious" as undercover police officer Brian O'Conner. Adapted from a Vibe magazine article about underground street races, the film became an unexpected hit. In the sequel, "2 Fast 2 Furious," Walker moved to center stage with his co-star Vin Diesel momentarily dropping out. Walker, a self-described "gearhead," kept his character's sports car from the film. Walker starred in other films, including the crime thriller "Running Scared," the Antarctic adventure "Eight Below" and the heist film "Takers." Though his stardom didn't make as much of an impact outside the "Fast & Furious" series, Walker continually drew praise from his co-stars and directors as a kind-hearted and eager collaborator. And "Fast & Furious" proved unusually enduring. Released in May, "Fast & Furious 6" was the most lucrative of them all, grossing more than $788 million worldwide. The seventh installment began shooting in September, with a release planned for July. "Your humble spirit was felt from the start," said Ludacris, Walker's "Fast & Furious" co-star, on Twitter. "Wherever you blessed your presence you always left a mark, we were like brothers." Walker is survived by his 15-year-old daughter.

It seems the fault of the death was the car they were in. It was a very fast type of car. From what I heard. The whole thing seems too sad.

Make no mistake about it, the car isn't at fault, the driver is. My brother has owned a Porsche Carerra for years.
The Sheriff's Department said that speed was a factor in the crash.

I didn't know who Paul was. I heard on the radio this morning that they were drag racing and hit a pole and then a tree? Something like that...I was half asleep and heard it when my alarm went off. Very sad.

Whenever any of you have the chance, here's the complete episode of "Charles in Charge" where a very young (teenage) Paul Walker guest-starred in. He is playing the role of Russell. By the way, the driver of the car, Roger Rodas, was a very good friend of Scott Baio's. Scott is devastated right now. Anyway, it's a cute fun, episode, but at the same time sad to watch now.

I'm kind of out of the loop. I'd never heard of him either. But the last report I read said that excessive speed caused the crash, but that there was no race.

Coroner: Paul Walker Porsche Hit 100-Plus mph Before Crash
UPDATED 01/04/14 : Driver Roger Rodas lost control "for unknown reasons" before the fatal Nov. 30 accident in Santa Clarita, according to the final report.
The Porsche Carrera GT in which Paul Walker was a passenger was traveling faster than 100 mph when the car's driver lost control and crashed, according to the final report from the L.A. County Coroner's Office issued Friday.
According to an L.A. Sheriff's Department investigation of the crash, the red sports car, driven by Roger Rodas, was headed east on Hercules Street "at an unsafe speed, approximately 100+ mph," when Rodas lost control "for unknown reasons" and the car partially spun, hitting a curb, a tree and a light post. That impact spun the car around another 180 degrees, causing the passenger side of the car to hit another tree and burst into flames.
The fiery crash scattered debris across all four lanes of the Santa Clarita parkway as well as a nearby parking lot.
There was no sign of alcohol or drugs in the system of the car's driver, Rodas, 38, who died of "multiple traumatic injuries," according to the coroner's toxicology reports.
The Fast & Furious actor, 40, died of traumatic and thermal injuries; there was no sign of alcohol or drugs in his system, the report notes. The coroner checked for cocaine, marijuana, methamphetamine and other substances in Walker's body and the results were "negative" or "not detected" across the board.
Rodas and Walker had taken the vehicle for a drive on Nov. 30 shortly after an event held by the actor's charitable organization, Reach Out Worldwide. L.A. County firefighters arrived at the scene of the crash and determined the driver and passenger had both died, the report states.
The accident occurred at approximately 3:35 p.m. and 911 was called six minutes later, according to the report, which doesn't specify where the emergency phone call came from. "For unknown reasons, the driver lost control of his vehicle, and the vehicle partially spun around, and began traveling in a southeast direction," the report says. "The vehicle then struck a curb, and the driver's side of the vehicle struck a tree and then a light post. The force of those collisions caused the vehicle to spin 180 degrees and continue in an easterly direction. The passenger side of the vehicle then struck another tree and burst into flames."
The report says that when authorities arrived they found the car on its four wheels with the passenger side resting against a broken tree, "and it appeared that the vehicle was almost split in half." The report also stipulates about the passenger: "The decedent cannot be positively identified visually. The decedent is probably Paul William Walker IV."
A public memorial was held at the crash site on Dec. 8. After the crash, Universal held production and postponed the Summer 2014 release of the seventh entry in the Fast franchise to April 15, 2015. Walker's co-star in the franchise, Vin Diesel, posted a Facebook note on Thursday reflecting on the loss: "There was always moments of child-like laughter... We had accomplished so much by 2013... P.s. The complexities of Brotherhood, and the painful void... of it's absence."
