| Hey all! We were on the way to the football game last night when my friend, Yvette, called and asked to speak to David, my hubby. I knew right away something was wrong.
My bro-in-law, Ray, was drinking in a bar downtown (apparently he has a running tab) and he left the bar. He went outside and was standing in the middle of the street, using his cell phone. Yes, he was drunk. He had started drinking at about 4 p.m.
A truck that was coming saw him there but couldn't fully stop, so he did what he could. And, come to find out, the man behind the wheel of the truck was driving drunk (how drunk..I don't know).
So, the truck hit Ray and then the car behind the truck ran him over, too. When the ambulance got there, he wasn't breathing and he had no pulse. There was also a lot of blood.
They did CPR on him and got him to breathing again, got him ready, took him to a landing zone where Airlife landed and then flew him to Brook Army Medical Center (BAMC) in San Antonio.
We all went up there and the doctor told us right away it didn't look good. Both legs were shattered, he had internal bleeding, his brain was swelling and his neck had been broke at the base of the skull.
Basically, he was brain dead but his heart was beating and he was giving meds to elevate his blood pressure.
So, they put him on life support to see what they could do but after everything, he was just too badly hurt for them to mend him.
So his mother, Ruth, finally made the difficult decision on Saturday to disconnect the machines. After 30-45 minutes, he slipped away at 10:24 a.m.
So, keep our family in your thoughts and prayers and especially Ruth. He lived with her, so its going to be especially hard on her. He was the "baby" of the family.
It is also the latest in a long line of tragedies in the family. When David was newly certified as an ECA (Emergency Care Attendant), he went to the scene of an truck accident, where the man had also been drinking. How much, I don't know. Turns out it was his oldest brother, Lynn. He was on life support until they were going to disconnect him. Before they could carry that out, he passed on. They buried him in 1984.
Ten years later, his dad, Henry was driving his truck and got hit from behind. We didn't think it hurt him too badly, but then about a month later, his dad, Henry, had a heart attack. He was called to the scene, where he helped the other crew members perform CPR on his dad for 30 miles to the hospital. His dad died in 1994.
In 1995, Ray, the brother in this message was already heavily in to alcohol and was doing drugs when he shot himself in the head. He was in the hospital in critical condition for awhile, but miraculously, pulled out of it, though it left him with seizures. Sadly, this didn't stop him from drinking, which led to him passing away on November 10, 2007.
Please, keep the family in your prayers. "I would fight for you - I'd lie for you - walk the wire for you - ya I'd die for you..."

| ((Misti)) I am so sorry. I know what it's like to have to make a decision such as your mother in law had to make. My family had to do that with my Grandfather almost 11 years ago on Christmas Eve. It is something that stays with us, but I know he is in Peace, with my Lord, so I know he is safe, and no longer suffering. That's what has helped us cope all of these years.
I am sorry for your loss! |

Please, keep the family in your prayers. Thanks, everyone! Well, the report I gave above probably wasn't the correct story; the way small towns are rumors run rampant.
The police report said that he was standing near the curb when the truck hit him. And, normally when he was drunk you could smell it from a mile away. But David got in the back of the ambulance with him before he left in the helicopter and he said that he didn't smell alcohol.
So, he was drinking but not drunk. It may have been he was in the wrong spot at the wrong time, we may never know the whole story. I'm sure when the autopsy report comes out it will have all the correct info in it.
But, I want to thank you all for your prayers and thoughts. They are appreciated."I would fight for you - I'd lie for you - walk the wire for you - ya I'd die for you..." | |
