| They're your first cousins, once removed. (Because they're not from the next generation as you are) YOUR children, when/if you choose to have them, would be second cousins to your cousins' children. It has to do with whether you're from the same generation, etc.. .

| LOL, Jacob! Okay..........Your cousin's child would be your first cousin once removed. Your son (if you had one) and your cousin's son would be second cousins to each other. Does that make more sense? | |

| This language of 'once removed', 'twice removed' is what makes it confusing LOL I just know that if they are not children of my siblings... then they are my cousins.. depending on who had them, for example if I have a cousin who has a child... then that CHILD is also my cousin.. but in 2nd place... then when that CHILD grows up and has a kid, that KID is also my cousin but in 3rd place... get it? :sillySmiley: | |

| Cousins are from the same generation. Let's see if I can explain. My mother and her sister each had daughters, myself and my cousin Jean. Jean and I are first cousins. Jean has a daughter, Theresa. She is my first cousin-once removed. We are not on the same level of generation. If I had a daughter, she would be Theresa's second cousin becuase they would be on the same level of generation. Theresa's daughter is my first cousin-twice removed. She is two levels of generation below me. She isn't my 3rd cousin or 2nd cousin. Whole cousins are from the same generation. | |

| I don't even bother with the "once removed" situation. It's too confusing for me. Then again, so many things are confusing to me. :shy:
I just say that my mother's first cousins are my second cousins, her second cousins are my third cousins, and so on.
So, if you have a cousin with kids, yes, those kids are your cousins regardless of where they are within the generation.
I have a third cousin (only two years younger that I) who insists that her children call me "Auntie" because of the generation thing. I...hate...that!!! They were calling me "Auntie" in front of their dad one day during a visit, and he corrected them. They told him that their mom said I was their aunt, and when we explained, they looked so confused. I've heard of other people doing that cousin/aunt thing, but it's not for me. It's weird, and can be confusing to children. When they get older, they'll have the family tree all screwed up. I have cousins who are in their sixties, and if they're not the kind who are really laid back, I just answer them "yes/no sir...yes/no ma'am. Simple as that. I was raised not to call them "Uncle" or "Aunt". Sheesh!
I'm off to read the info that LIWnut aka Marylin put up about this topic. I'll be back.
Take care. | |

| lol, I read the chart as well, and I have no clue as to what it said!:blonde: I just think of it this way.... My cousins are my aunt and uncle's children.. My cousins children are my second cousins, my second cousins children are my third cousins and so on... | |
