A US toddler is believed to have accidentally shot his mother dead with a loaded gun he thought was a toy.

Two-year-old Troy Bailey kept calling for his mother, Julia Bennett, after he allegedly pointed a 9mm Glock pistol at her and pulled the trigger in their Florida home.

Miss Bennett's ex-boyfriend claimed he saw the boy fire the pistol after he left his gun unattended, WSVN-TV reports.

Troy Bailey, Snr, had a permit for the gun and is not being investigated as a person of interest in the shooting.

Police said Miss Bennett died of a single gunshot wound.

Young Troy's family said they were still coming to terms with the situation and were trying to comfort the confused child.

"He just keeps calling her name, calling 'Mum, mum'," said Marva Anglin, Troy's aunt.

His family and neighbours have expressed doubt that he would have been able to pull the trigger on the gun.

"I'm not saying he didn't do it but if he did, he's a strong little boy," said neighbour Naomi Williams.

Police swabbed the toddler after the shooting, checking his mouth and hands for gunpowder.

Troy was initially taken into the care of social workers but has since been released to his mother's family.

That's really sad. I mean like very very very sad. parents should never leave guns left open like this,

But why in heck the mother had a GUN??? It's becoming too much normal that a common family have guns and other weapons in their houses, and then, they have these kind of troubles...

I don't agree with keeping guns in the house.poor kid...
