| I went to the dentist today. Mom and Dad were going to get their teeth cleaned and everything. They decided to squeeze me in at the last minute. (Nothing like being unprepared to see a dentist is there? ) Dentists terrify me. Not so much of what they are or what they do but of what could happen. I deal with emetophobia on a daily basis, so when someone messes with my mouth it scares me more because I'm afraid of gagging. I was shaking like crazy. (Although watching Andy Griffith on the television they have in there helped me. ) Anyway, we all know I need braces and which I will be getting before the end of this year. (Hopefully if not this month, next month.) But the doctor found out some other things. First is that when my wisdom teeth come in, they all 4 will have to be extracted. I had previously been told it was only 2, maybe even 1...but alas, I guess as you grow older things happen! Anyway, that freaked me out because I hear so many stories of how awful and miserable it is, plus, because blood gets in your stomach, you can vomit some after. Double scary! Second, I have a baby tooth that never came out because an adult tooth was never under it. This baby tooth does not even have roots. It's just there. Under it is a cyst. The dentist is not too worried about the cyst, be she did refer me to an oral surgeon to have an exam on it to be on the safe side. Eventually, that baby tooth will have to be extracted and I will have to have either an implant, bridge, or a partial. The nice part of the visit was that she said I take extremely good care of my teeth and I had hardly any tarter or plaque build-up. I had an extremely tiny cavity, but she took care of that. I didn't even need a shot to numb me.
My thing is for everyone to just please pray that when all this work has to be done is that it would go easy with no complications and no vomiting. For an emetophobe that's important! Also, that the cyst would not be anything serious. It won't all be done at once of course, some of this has to wait until I get older-- but still..... Main focus right now is getting my braces which I am thrilled about. My orthodontist is also a TMJ specialist and he has been my Mom's doctor. He is a nice dear older man. I also discovered through my best friend that he was her Mom's, her brother and sister, and her orthodontist and they have no complaints, only praises, so that puts me even more at ease about him. | Prayers going up now, Julia. Maybe it's an option to have your wisdom teeth removed one at a time. It might not be cost effective or work in your situation, but I ended up doing that. I found it much easier to cope with. My son and my husband had all 4 removed at once. They were put under and had pain meds afterwards. They had no issues with vomitting, so hopefully you won't either.
My youngest daughter was born tongue-tied. That means the little flap of skin holding the tongue to the bottom of her mouth is shorter than usual. She has gagging issues because of it. Her mouth is also very small, so that doesn't help. It's definitely good to stay as calm as possible, focus on something other than what's going on in her mouth, sometimes listen to music.
I hope everything goes smoothly for you.

| I had to have a baby tooth & 2 wisdom teeth removed when I was younger. I didn't have to have a replacement for the missing tooth because the braces just shoved the teeth together. I did vomit blood from my surgery, but I will say I was so doped up it didn't even phase me. Do you know are your wisdom teeth impacted? | |

My son had all four removed at once too, and he did fine. I was more worried about it than he was. He was on 'laughing gas' and never felt a thing (you're not even able to worry about anything Julia, when you're on laughing gas or 'put under', not even gagging ). He was sent home with Vicodin and never even had to take it! He coped just fine with a Motrin 800. Hope everything goes ok for you Julia.

| I get very nervous when I go to the dentist. I hate having my teeth messed with. I had only 2 wisdom teeth come in. I had mine pulled by an oral surgeon. I was very calm and relaxed. It's been about 10 years since I had mine pulled. Prayers that everything goes well for you, miss Julia. It's okay to be nervous. I'm not afraid of the dentist, just having to go. | |
