Yep, it was Irv Hartwig, the blacksmith. Oddly enough, the "Irv Hartwig, Blacksmith" sign can still be seen in later episodes. You'd think Albert would have ripped that thing down and burned it.

Yes. I tought about it many, but many times...And this makes Hyphas (the one of the "Little House Encyclopedy") to forge one of his wild theories... He assured that before Mr. Carter established himself in Walnut Grove, the town remained TEN YEARS without a blacksimth. I don't know how did he figure it out!

I've never seen this episode and personally I don't think I want to see it. Is it very graphic?

Actually, I consider "Sylvia" to be among the best episodes of the entire series. It is so full of excitement and intensity. I will take its so-called unusual plot over a typical Season 1 script any day. Those who have not seen the episode yet are in for one heck of a roller-coaster ride.

That is so weird about the sign. You think the entire town would've burned it.
To answer ingallsfan2008, I didn't find it graphic, but VERY disturbing. Creepy. The only graphic scene is a bit of a fight/struggle. They don't show the r**pe. Just afterwards with Sylvia crying and disheveled. It's a very un-LHOTP episode though with the extreme close-ups of the guy's eye watching/stalking, the horror-film-like composing, and the ridiculously creepy mask.
SPOILERS AHEAD - I kind of assume everyone knows this stuff though!
To respond to David, my boyfriend and I have been watching the series in order over the last several years and we recently watched Sylvia. Sometimes my boyfriend is a little bored with certain episodes, but he was totally enthralled with this one. You're right, it really is a roller-coaster ride. I think that had if it had a happier ending - (Albert and Sylvia are together & Hartwig dies), then more people would think it was a good episode. Thematically, it's very heavy but it's also very emotional and suspenseful. I just think the depressing ending just ruins it. It feels like the sweet girl went through so much torture plus neglect at the hands of her father all to die. And poor Albert too.
I don't think a Little House experience would be complete without seeing Sylvia, just because it was such an intense episode. And it also gives you a chance to go, "What the heck was Michael Landon thinking?!!" which is always fun to marvel over when he goes to the dark side with some of the episodes.

Yeah, Sylvia was a pretty dark episode. Sometimes I like to watch it, but a lot of times I skip over it...there is a lot of dark stuff on TV anyway, and sometimes the episode just depresses me. I do agree that it is a real roller-coaster ride!

i have never watched the whole thing before. when i saw him watching Sylvia when she was at school it creeped me out waay to much. the woods are like right behind my house and for like 3 weeks i didn't even want to walk up my rode even though barely any people live there.

I hate this episode!! Very dark for ML and when you consider that this was a family show, I thought the content was too intense for young viewers, especially since it dealt with rape....no thanks...this one ranks right up with May We Make Them Proud as far as episodes I don't particularly care for...
Oh yea, then there is The Godsister...
Let's not even get started on that one...

Ha! I agree, to me Sylvia was terrible. Especially when the rape involved a young girl.

i think that is another thing that threw me off. it was like she was a young girl, i am a young girl, who says that it can not happen to me. that is another reason why it scared me.

This isn't an episode that I watch. It's just too creepy and made even more creepy by the sign that remains even after Hartwig is gone. I think it would have been an easier episode to accept if Sylvia hadn't died in the end. Maybe her father decided he had to move away in order to give them a more normal life after all that happened and Charles had to help Albert deal with Sylvia leaving. Her death seems so pointless.

I own the season of Little House that this episode is on but I haven't watched it yet. I don't like reading books with content like this, and even though I love Little House TV show, I don't think I could watch this episode!

I agree. ML wasn't afraid to deal with "dark" subject matter (rape in this episode, alcoholism, drug abuse, racism), and this episode tackled a subject that, although it occurred, wasn't very spoken of. Like Sylvia's father's reaction, he blamed her for it, when it was in no way her fault. I think that was the mentality of a lot of people in that time period, and maybe ML did this episode to show that it absolutely wasn't true. Her death did seem completely pointless though - I know they probably didn't want Albert to be married at 14 and have that whole storyline, but her moving away or something like you said, Cheryl, would have been much better than her death at the end. So depressing.
It was nice to see Matt Laborteaux's acting brought front and center though.

Agreed! The only part where he didn't sound good for me was when he kept saying to Sylvia, "It's alright, it's alright". It sounded as they say to sing songy to me, but that might have just been his young maturing voice cracking, lol.

Me being a lover of mystery thriller movies... this one was right up my alley I have only seen it twice I believe... it's not something that I would watch over and over like other Little House episodes... but I thought it was a good episode.
It's far from what the usual Little House episodes are... it didn't feel like I was watching Little House but at the same time I'm seeing these characters from Little House in this twisted story... I made a video based on this episode, but it centers around how Albert feels. I chose the song "Walking Away" because I think that's how Albert felt when he was going to run away with Sylvia... he was going to get out of town where nobody would know the trouble they've had to deal with in order to stay together....
Here it is...

Carol, that was very thoughtful. I love this episode, although I concede it contains some issues which are difficult to deal with.
Maybe they had Sylvia die to emphasize the point that it is a "one of a kind" episode and to ensure that there would be no sequel a few years down the road. Like it or not, there is not much denying that "Sylvia" is the most memorable episode of Season 7.

now that I've watched episodes that are a little harsher on Albert's character (such as Home Again) I think I might want to watch this episode. reading some of the posts by other people, I've seen that Sylvia dies. not to spoil it when I watch this episode, but how does Sylvia die?
